Long gone are winter's cold nights and chapped lips, but now summer has a laundry list of epidermal ailments for us to deal with (there's always something, isn't there?!). So I scoured the online apothecary, also known as Etsy's Health & Beauty section, to find a little something for all of your skin's summer "somethings."
Here's my list of summer essentials you'll need to keep your skin looking pretty, polished, and ready to party before, during, and after your outdoor adventures. (And for those of you who partied too hard during your Spring Break adventures, UrbApothecary's Repair Salve is great for tattoo aftercare.)
1. BUG REPELLANT
If my body is my temple, then mosquitos are my disciples. These tiny flying demons are so loyally devoted to me that I believe your best bet for bug defense is to just stand next to me. However, since I am not available for sale on Etsy (but my handmade, Mamma Nature-friendly products are!), I suggest you try Queen Bee Honey's Mosquito Repellant or The Hippy Homemaker's Bug Repellant. Nikki Candles makes a bug spray that's actually a lotion, and NakedBotanicals makes a travel kit for on-the-go insect-opposers.
Want to make your Facebook friends jealous of your vaca? Post a picture of you eating a lobster-- not looking like a lobster. Use Bee Happy Life's organic sunscreen bar or Juniperseed Merc's sensitive skin sunscreen lotion before heading outdoors, and remember to re-apply your sun block regularly to prevent your skin from burning.
To keep your tan looking fresh, try Olive Branch Organics' body butter and enjoy the ambrosial aroma of pomegranate while you moisturize. For summer skin needing extra TLC, slather on Oras Amazing Herbal's Ultra Healing Body Butter. This Shea butter-based cream is made without water, and is an intensive treatment for super dry skin.
But if your post-beach "glow" looks more like a "forest fire", you need The Hippy Homemaker's After Sun Spray. Made from peppermint/ sage infused apple cider vinegar, colloidal silver, and aloe vera gel, this soothing spray cools your skin while healing the burn.
Going camping? WildrootNaturals' 5-in-1 kit has everything you need for your weekend getaway. Their Camping Emergency Kit contains "No Itch Stick" for bug bites, Passionfruit Pain Away for sore muscles, lotion with SPF and bug spray, and travel soaps for you and your dishes.
5. skin salves
As a weekends warrior, you work hard all week and play hard all weekend-- and your body feels in on Monday. Assuage your ailing muscles with Aromatic Health's muscle ointment, and sooth inflammation with The Healers Hand's organic warming balm with cayenne pepper, ginger, and turmeric powder. I look like a Dalmatian when I return from an especially fun adventure, thanks to all the bruises I collect on my legs, so I need NotaDirtyHippie's Bumps & Bruises Lotion Bar.
Please note that these natural remedies are approved by Mamma Nature, but not by the FDA (nearly all of these product listings have a little disclaimer like that, so I figured I'd throw one in here, too.)
