When I was looking for something to use as bookends, I found some old Julius Caesar busts at a thrift shop for $1. The price was right and I loved them, but when I put them on display I felt like my interior decorator was my dad (and that's a bad thing). So I popped open some spray paint, painted them bright blue, and now it looks like my bookcase was styled by Elle Decor.
They can be any (hard) material and it doesn't matter if the paint is chipped or anything because the fresh paint will camouflage imperfections (one of my Caesar's was missing his nose, poor little guy, but you can't tell now that his face is painted blue).
I love Rust-Oleum spray paint because it goes on nice and smooth, and to ensure a drip-free finish, apply a few light coats and allow the paint to dry between applications.
Then use them as bookends like CEY Design did with this happy elephant, turn them into magnets like Original Animal Magnet did with the whole farm, or just paint them up and place them anywhere you want a burst of color.
